EAST LANSING, Mich. — Michigan State placed 10 wrestlers in the top six, which includes four finalists and one champion at the Reno Tournament of Champions on Thursday, December 20 en route to a second place overall finish at the tournament.
The Spartans finished the tournament with 150.5 team points, second to just No. 2-ranked Oklahoma State who took the team title with 204.5 points. This is the second time Michigan State has placed second in Reno in the last three years as they took second with 129 points during the 2016-17 season.
Redshirt freshman Cameron Caffey was the top-seeded wrestler at 184 pounds and improved to 15-0 on the season with a tournament championship on Thursday. Previously, Caffey was crowned the184-pound champion at the MSU Open and the Navy Classic.
Caffey earned bonus points for the Spartans in three bouts with a fall over Jason Gisell (1:31), a major decision over Tony Lombardo (13-4) and a fall over Jackson McKinney (1:38). The Carbondale, Illinois native defeated Tate Samuelson in the semi-finals by way of a 5-2 decision before besting Anthony Orozco of Menlo in the finals, 13-6.
Other finalists for the Spartans included sophomore Rayvon Foley at 125 pounds, and redshirt seniors Anthony Tutolo at 133 pounds and Austin Eicher at 141 pounds. Redshirt sophomore Drew Hughes placed fourth at 174 pounds, redshirt sophomore Jake Tucker was fifth at 157 pounds and redshirt freshman Brad Wilton was fifth at 197 pounds. Taking sixth place at 141 and 149 pounds respectively were redshirt sophomore Alex Hrisopoulos and redshirt freshman Jaden Enriquez.
Freshman Peyton Omania competed as an unattached wrestler and advanced to the semifinals at 149 pounds. Omania finished the tournament fourth in his division, falling to Old Dominion’s Kenan Carter, 6-0, in the third place bout.
