East Lansing, MI
The #11 Michigan State Spartans improved their record on the season to 3-1 with a 101-33 blowout win over Tennessee Tech. The Golden Eagles will be by far the worst team the Spartans will face this season. It was the biggest margin of victory in Spartan basketball history.
The Spartans were led by big man Nick Ward who had 23 points and six rebounds. Cassius Winston had 19 points and six assists and Joshua Langford rounded out the double-digit scorers with 16 points.
Tom Izzo said of the contest, “That team not only struggles, but they just came here from Carolina on Friday and flew in here. That’s Iike the gauntlet we are going to have in the next five or six games. If you asked me I do not think our freshmen are ready. I really think we finished better and I am happy for that.”
Tennessee Tech coach Steve Payne said of the tilt, “They are a team that can win the national championship and there is no question about that. But that is the case every year. We were not surprised by this.”
The Spartans shot 55% from the field including 42% from the three. The Spartans shot 72% from the free throw line and had 25 assists on 37 baskets.
Izzo added, “I thought we went into the game with three or four goals. I thought at times we accomplished all of them. The only negative of the night was the number of wide-open threes in the first half. I thought we knocked down some big threes in the second half.”
The Spartans led the battle of the boards 47-27. Izzo played 15 players including all five freshmen. Gabe Brown led the freshmen with seven points.
The Spartans return to action against UCLA on Thanksgiving night (10 PM) in Las Vegas. That game tips off at 10 PM ET. That game can be seen on FS1.
