HARTFORD, Wisconsin — The Michigan State men’s golf team put together its best round of the Marquette Intercollegiate with a 1-under-par 287 in the final round on Tuesday at Erin Hills Golf Course in Hartford, Wisconsin. The Spartans ended the tournament 30-over-par 894 (303-304-287) to finish in ninth place.

“It was nice to finish with a little better round today, unfortunately, we put ourselves in too big of a hole to finish where we wanted to be,” MSU head coach Casey Lubahn said. “We need to focus on getting a little tougher and more disciplined, especially in adverse conditions.”

All five players in the MSU lineup recorded their lowest – or tied their lowest – rounds of the tournament on Tuesday, led by Andrew Walker, who shot a 3-under-par 69.

“I think today was kind of more of the team were used to, and I suspect that we’ll play well next week as a result of our performance today,” Lubahn said.

Northwestern won the tournament with a 6-under-par 858 (286-296-276), finishing two shots ahead of Arizona State.

James Piot led MSU by finishing tied for 16th place at 3-over-par 219 (74-75-70). Piot carded a 2-under-par 70 on Tuesday, going 1-under-par on both the front and back nine. The sophomore has finished in the top 20 of all three tournaments so far this year.

Walker was one of 12 players in the field to shoot in the 60s on Tuesday. His 3-under-par 69 included five birdies and an eagle on the par-5, 613-yard 14th hole. He ended the tournament 4-over-par 220 (76-75-69) and tied for 21stplace.

Troy Taylor II’s 1-over-par 73 in the final round got him to 9-over-par 225 (78-74-73) for the tournament, which put him in 39th place.

Donnie Trosper penciled a 3-over-par 75 on Tuesday, finishing the tournament 14-over-par 230 (75-80-75).

Devin Deogun was 20-over-par 236 (79-80-77) in his first time in the lineup this year.

Kaleb Johnson shot a 2-over-par 74 in the final round, playing individually. Johnson was 5-over-par 221 (76-71-74) and tied for 25th place.

It will be a quick turnaround for the Spartans as they’re back in action October 7-8 at the Fighting Irish Classic in South Bend, Indiana.
