Michigan State recently received a commitment from two-sport star Jase Bowen of Toledo (OH) Central Catholic to play both baseball and football and the Spartans have also offered the same opportunity to Zeeland (MI) East 2019 3-star defensive end and baseball standout Adam Berghorst.
Berghorst, who took a visit to Michigan State earlier this month, spoke with Spartan Nation and said that he had a good opportunity to catch up with the Michigan State baseball coaching staff and has enjoyed getting to know members of both the football and baseball staffs.
“It went really well, I met with the baseball coaches the last visit I took, so that was good to see them again,” he said. “I’m building a lot more relationships with the guys on their staff, I feel like they’re all great guys who are top notch.”
Along with his offer from #5 Michigan State, Berghorst also holds offers from Northwestern, Notre Dame, Boston College, Indiana, Iowa State, Kentucky, Minnesota, Nebraska, Pittsburgh, Michigan, and Purdue, along with a handful of other offers.
While Berghorst said that his recruitment remains open and fluid, he did say that he views Michigan State, Northwestern, and Notre Dame as his top three choices.
When it comes to Notre Dame, Berghorst said that he is high on the Fighting Irish and is impressed with what the school has to offer both academically and athletically.
“Great, great academics, probably the best of who I’m being recruited by,” he said. “They have a great tradition of football, they’re known around the world. I have a really good relationship with the defensive line coach, coach Elston, so I really like them a lot.”
Berghorst also said that he’s impressed with Northwestern, both athletically and academically and added that it’s another school that’s close to home, which is another positive for him.
“I really like them too,” he said. “It’s close to home, it’s right outside of Chicago, which is awesome and then they have great academics as well,” he said. “I’d really like to visit them soon and check out what they’ve got, they’ve got a new building, which I’ve heard is amazing. And I have another good relationship with coach Long, the defensive line coach.”

On the baseball field, Berghorst is a standout starting pitcher and also plays first base when he’s not on the mound.
Considering that he and Bowen were offered the same opportunity to play both baseball and football, Berghorst said that he was able to spend some time with Bowen the last time he was on campus in East Lansing and said that the two had the chance to spend time together and discuss the ins and outs of their recruitment.
“Before the last visit I took, he DM’d me and we reached out to each other and spent most of the day together and we talked about our recruiting,” he said. “I’m just really happy for him on his decision, that’s awesome.”
While the recruiting process often brings plenty of opportunities for top recruits, like Berghorst, it also brings plenty of stress for them and their families and the 6-foot-7, 245-pound two-sport star admitted that being heavily recruited by so many schools is starting to take a toll on him.
“I’m definitely getting sick of it, it takes up a lot of time,” he admitted. “Just the time that it takes up, all of the phone calls. It’s all a blessing and it’s all a good thing, but it really does get sickening after a while.”
Berghorst also told Spartan Nation that he expects to make a decision at some point in the next month or two.
