Michigan State Scrimmages Under the Lights at Spartan Stadium
EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State football team held its second scrimmage of spring practice at night under the lights at Spartan Stadium with temperatures in the mid-40s.
The scrimmage, which utilized a modified scoring system and lasted two hours, was 123 plays long (including special teams) and won by the defense, 29-15.
“First of all, it gives us five days where we’re not practicing, so they can use that,” said Dantonio, as Wednesday marked the team’s 11th practice of the spring and sixth since last Tuesday. “We also just took advantage of the weather, and playing at night under the lights in the stadium was nice. We got about 110 plays in on offense and defense, which was good.
“I think the defense again came with intensity. We have young quarterbacks, and they made some mistakes. But the defense is flying around and playing very, very well. They’re tackling well in space and playing well at the point of attack. I thought our offense had a couple of drives that went pretty good, but at the end of the day, you have to score more touchdowns.”
The Spartans will take the next few days off before returning to the practice field on Tuesday, April 3 for their 12thworkout of the spring.
“We’ll now have almost a week off heading into our last week of spring practice,” Dantonio said. “The spring game is coming, so we’re looking forward to that opportunity for people to come out and watch.”
The annual Green-White spring game, presented by McLaren Health Plan, is set for Saturday, April 7 at 5 p.m. in Spartan Stadium. Prior to the spring game, the football program will hold its annual youth clinic, presented by Sparrow Health System, from 12:30-2 p.m. at the John and Becky Duffey Practice Fields (ages 8-12). Both events are free.
