Answering your #5 Michigan State Football Questions and Emails…

Hondo who is looking for early in spring ball?  Ray K.

The name of the game has been speed.  This is the fastest team in the Mark Dantonio era and they are using it all over the field.  Every person I have spoken to without being asked have talked about the speed.

Hondo can Matt Allen be as good as his brothers Jack and Brian?  Chris Kirk

Yes, he can.  He has to win at starter’s role and I expect him to.  It now is about taking the next step for him and I can tell you a piece of wise advice that Pat Narduzzi gave me, “Never bet against an Allen.”

Hondo what are your expectations of Kalon Gervin this year?  Mile Thomas

I have zero expectations of him.  I never expect anything from any freshman and I stand by that.

Hondo I know that Rocky Lombardi has had a ton of praise from you and the coaches.  How has Brian Lewerke embraced him?  Brad Hansen

Lewerke has had a great offseason and he and Rocky get along well.  In fact, Lewerke said of his redshirt freshman protégé Lombardi, “Rocky’s a very vocal guy. He’s well-respected among all the guys. With his wrestling background, he’s a tough guy so guys respect that. I can definitely see him as a guy that will step up in that role, too.”

Hondo you predicted Khari Willis will be a captain this year and I have seen players bragging about his play and leading.  Any idea how he is taking that leadership role?  Mary Figg

Khari said that he has plans of growing as a leader this spring, “Well, now we can get out on the field and we can put it to use. Working out and doing it in the workouts is good, but if I can find a way to do it just as effectively, if not more effectively, on the field, then that would be a plus.”

Hondo I hear a lot of people talk about youth on the Spartan football team.  But are they really that young?  Scott Harvey

Consider this fact per MSU about the Spartan “Youth” and this team.  After featuring one of the youngest teams in the nation last season, Michigan State returns a total of 49 letter winners and 19 position starters in 2018. A total of 33 players returning have starting experience (16 offense, 14 defense, three special teams). Out of a combined 286 possible starting positions in 2017 on offense and defense throughout the course of 13 games, the Spartans are returning 239 of those starts (84 percent). The 19 position starters returning on offense and defense are tied for the second most in the FBS (Kansas, 20). According to the S&P+ Ratings from SB Nation, MSU has the most returning production of any team in the FBS.
