19 TX WR Genson Hooper Has An Spartan Offer & Talks Michigan State

Over the course of the past month, Houston (TX) St. John’s 2019 wide receiver Genson Hooper has landed a handful of high-level Division 1 offers and the latest offer to come in for the 3-star recruit was from #5 Michigan State.

Spartan Nation caught up with Hooper to talk about the recruiting process and the Spartans and he said that he’s been speaking with Michigan State wide receivers coach Terrence Samuel on a regular basis and is continuing to learn more about Michigan State from an academic and athletic standpoint.

“I’ve been talking to the wide receivers coach, Coach Terrence Samuel a lot and he’s a great guy,” he said. “He’s been telling me about the program and how he operates and how he coaches. He’s been telling me about the great academics that they have there and the great program that they’re really building and his coaching style and what he brings to the table and how he can develop me as a person and as a player. That’s really enticing to me and it’s been a great recruiting process so far.”

Along with his offer from the Spartans, Hooper also holds offers from Arizona, Baylor, California, Duke, Houston, Iowa State, Minnesota, Northwestern, Ole Miss Vanderbilt and Virginia.

While it is still early in his recruitment, Hooper told Spartan Nation that while he is from the state of Texas, he would definitely consider choosing a northern school if he felt it was the best fit for him personally.

“Absolutely, any place where I can play football and great football is a great opportunity,” he said. “There’s kind of a trend in the NFL and in college where some of the best football is played up north. So that would be an awesome possibility.”

Michigan State has found success recruiting the state of Texas in recent years as the Spartans currently have three players from the Lonestar state heading into the 2018 season. Hooper admitted that he doesn’t know any of the current players on the team, but noted that his mother is friends with the mother of offensive lineman Tyler Higby and said he could reach out to Higby when he gets closer to making a decision.

Now that he has an offer from Michigan State, Hooper said that he would definitely consider the Spartans and said that in talking with Samuel and doing some research of his own, he can see Michigan State’s track record of producing NFL caliber players and how hard the coaching staff works to help players reach that level.

“Absolutely, they have a great resume,” he said. “Knowing coach Samuel and knowing the reputation that they have and just me doing my homework, I can see the product that they put out and take pride in and put in the effort to help guys get to where they want to be. It’s very interesting to me and very enticing.”

Hooper said that he doesn’t have a plan set in stone to visit or camp at Michigan State this summer, but did say he would like to take a visit to East Lansing in the not-so-distant future so he can get a better feel for the school and the environment before making a final decision.

“Absolutely, everything is kind of up in the air right now, but I appreciate how Coach Samuel communicates with me every day,” he said. “I really respect him and the MSU community for the efforts that they’ve put into recruiting me. So I’m definitely looking at them and evaluating and trying to see how I would fit into that program. It’s all about meeting the coaching staff, getting on campus and just seeing how it feels from a first-hand experience.”
