Muskegon (MI) Mona Shores 2019 linebacker Jacob Wahlberg has long considered himself a fan of #16 Michigan State and as his recruitment has picked up over the course of the past year, he’s been hearing from the Spartans, who could extend an offer in the near future.
“I love Michigan State, I’ve always grown up being a State fan,” Wahlberg told Spartan Nation. “I live close to them and my family has always grown up loving the Spartans.”
The 6-foot-4, 215 pound 3-star linebacker already holds seven offers, including offers from Pittsburgh, Iowa State, and Central Michigan and has also gained the interest of several other Division 1 programs.
While Michigan State hasn’t offered Wahlberg yet, he said a potential offer would be a big deal for him and feels that he would fit right in with the Spartans’ defensive style.
“It would mean the world,” he said. “I love the coaching staff, I’ve talked to coach (Mike) Tressel a few times, I’ve met with him a few times. Everything about them, I love and I love the way they play football over there.”
Whalberg, who was recently on campus to take in a bowl practice said that he came away impressed with the practice, particularly the linebackers.
“I loved it,” he said. “They get after it every day just like coach Tressel always says. I loved their linebacking corps and what they do with them over there.”
While he plays linebacker at the high school level, there is the possibility that Whalberg could play a different position at the college level, potentially defensive end or tight end, which the 6-foot-4 standout said he’s spoken with co-defensive coordinator Mike Tressel about and it’s something that he would be on board with doing.
“Coach Tressel said to me that he could maybe see some defensive end in me,” he said. “He could see that, or maybe some tight end, which some other colleges have thought. But wherever colleges want me, I’m going to play.”
While nothing is set in stone as far a decision date, Wahlberg admitted that he would like to make a commitment before the start of his senior season at the high school level.
And when it comes to what he is looking for in a school and program, Wahlberg told Spartan Nation that the facilities in East Lansing stack up against those of any other school and also said that his experiences on gameday at Michigan State is exactly what he’s looking for.
“They’re awesome,” he said. “I’ve been to a few big facilities and they’re right up there with every one of them.”
“Everything about it is what I want when I picture going to college,” he added.”
