While Belleville 2019 ATH Julian Barnett, one of the top recruits from the state of Michigan, had continued to see his recruitment grow and offers continue to come in since the end of his junior season, the 6-foot-1, 185 pound standout capable of playing a number of different positions announced on Thursday that he would be ending his recruitment and committing to #16 Michigan State.

Spartan Nation spoke with Barnett’s high school coach, Jermain Crowell, shortly after he made his announcement and talked about what Barnett brings to the table on the football field and where he could fit in when he arrives at Michigan State in the fall of 2019.

Crowell said that there is one word that stands out to him when it comes to describing Barnett and said that while Barnett is capable of playing almost anywhere on the football field on either side of the ball, he feels the 4-star recruit will fit best in the Michigan State secondary.

“Some reporters called me earlier and they asked me to describe Julian Barnett, and I’m like he’s got chutzpah, it’s a word I remember from when I was young that I heard on TV, I don’t know what chutzpah is, but he’s got that,” he said. “He’s great, he’s gutty, he’s big and fast and he’s got all of that athleticism, but he loves contact. When Dantonio was on the phone with him, I know he must have asked him which position he wanted to play and I heard Julian say ‘Well, I love offense, but I really, really love contact and hitting people.’ For me, as a coach, I’ve coached a lot of DBs and he’s a natural. When I put him at corner, without me coaching him, he can do that naturally, so that’s why I always say he’s probably going to be a corner, to me.”

Before committing to Michigan State on Friday, Barnett held 21 offers including offers from several top Division 1 programs, like Clemson, Georgia, Alabama, Auburn, Notre Dame and Ohio State, who he received an offer from on Thursday.

One of Barnett’s teammates, 2018 defensive back Davion Williams, just signed with Michigan State on Wednesday. Like Barnett, Williams is a 4-star defensive back according to 247Sports.

Crowell told Spartan Nation and said that while Barnett originally resisted the idea of playing a position other than cornerback and wide receiver at the collegiate level, he has since become more willing to play a position like outside linebacker and feels that he’s capable of playing just about anywhere.

“Early on in his recruiting process, coaches would come through and they’d say he’s going to be an outside linebacker and used to starve himself and he’d be like ‘No coach, I want to play DB and receiver’,” he said. “You’re naturally going to get bigger, you cannot watch what you eat to the point where – and now I think he’s just embraced it to the point where I’m not starving myself anymore and he wouldn’t lift weights because anytime he lifts weights, he swells up, so now he hits the weights, he swells up and he looks huge and I’m like, you might be an outside linebacker. I don’t know what he is, I just know he’s big, he’s the fastest kid on the team and he’s got the potential really big.”
