Daniels’ Record Performances Earn League Weekly Honors
Michigan State track & field’s sophomore Katelyn Daniels earned women’s Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week honors.
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State track & field’s sophomore Katelyn Daniels earned women’s Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week honors, announced on Wednesday, April 6, by the league office, after eclipsing the Florida Relays discus record last weekend and breaking the school record in the shot put.
Daniels’ 58.02-meter throw in the discus at the Florida Relays on April 1 came on her fourth attempt of the evening to earn a third-place finish. She was one of three competitors to break the Florida Relays record of 57.75m set back in 1991.
Daniels came off her record-breaking performance in the discus with an eighth-place finish in the women’s shot put. She progressively got better through the opening round, recording a 16.01-meter mark on her third attempt, breaking the MSU record of 15.86 meters set back in 1984.
Daniels was the 2015 Big Ten women’s discus champion, setting an MSU & conference meet record with a mark of 59.06 meters.
This is Michigan State’s first women’s Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week plaudit since Ashley Stacey garnered the honor on April 2, 2014. Last week, senior Rachele Schulist was named the league’s Track Athlete of the Week.
