Michigan State dropped a 3-1 decision to Wright State in its second game at the Hoosier Classic in Bloomington, Ind. on Saturday afternoon.
After an emotional 20-13 win over Bowling Green in 10 innings in the first game of the day, the Spartans could not string together much offense, as Wright State pitcher Ashley Sharp scattered seven hits, but only allowed a sixth-inning RBI double by Celeste Wood.
MSU lost the services of catcher Lindsey Besson and first baseman Sarah Gutknecht in the first game of the day, and entered the weekend without starting left fielder Kaitlyn Eveland. Junior Kassidy Kujawa is on limited duty, futher cutting into MSU’s available bench.
Michigan State (15-11) has two more games in the final day of the Hoosier Classic in Bloomington, taking on Western Illinois and Illinois-Chicago on Sunday.
“We are certainly behind the eight ball with players missing from our lineup – but we need to embrace that as an opportunity for others to step up instead of using it as an excuse for why we didn’t win the game. It’s a challenge, but I really would like to see some of our players take that challenge head-on tomorrow. We have two more games here, and it’s an opportunity to end on a high note.”
– Head Coach Jacquie Joseph
Dani Goranson went three innings, scattering six hits, striking out two and walking one. She left with the bases loaded in the top of the fourth with none out. Zalewski got out of the immediate jam, and allowed just one run in her three innings of relief. Celeste Wood had an RBI double in the sixth inning, going 2-for-3. Shanin Thomas went 1-for-3 with a double.
