After capping a memorable 2011 season with a thrilling victory against the Georgia Bulldogs of the Southeastern Conference (SEC), expectations are high – and will continue to be – for the MSU football program. Under the guidance of head coach Mark Dantonio, the Spartan football program has catapulted into national top 10 rankings and consideration. While celebrating recent successes, the importance of sustaining a nationally ranked football program cannot be understated for the viability of the entire Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at Michigan State University.

As a self-supporting auxiliary unit of the university, MSU Athletics does not receive general funds or scholarship accommodations from the university, which places reliance on ticket revenue, tax-deductible contributions, sponsorships, and revenue-sharing with members of the Big Ten Conference to fund all aspects of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. With approximately 70% of revenue directly tied to the Spartan football program, it is imperative the program remains competitive both within the Big Ten Conference and nationally.

For our Spartans, the road to the Rose Bowl begins at Spartan Stadium. From memorable plays, such as “Little Giants” or “Rocket”, to hosting U2’s 360° Tour, Spartan Stadium has been home to recent fanfare and celebrations. With top 25 attendance figures each year since 1955, Spartans everywhere are committed to making Spartan football home games “..the best seven days of the year”.

To enhance the fan experience at Spartan Stadium, I am excited to announce stadium enhancements aimed at meeting the needs of you, the fan, as well as our department vision of a perennial top 25 football program. As such, MSU Athletics will be working to install a new sound system and video boards on the north and south ends of the stadium for the 2012 football season. The technological capabilities and display of these video boards will be unlike any seen in a present-day football stadium.

The 2012 installation of a sound system and video boards, and other planned enhancements, will not come without a cost. As you read through this brochure, you will discover our vision for Spartan Stadium in 2012 as well as the necessary measures MSU Athletics will need to take to invest valuable resources into the Spartan football program.

Your support is vital to our success. Through your continued purchase of football season tickets and private contributions, you are making an investment into the future success of the Spartan football program. Our goals are shared. Our mission the same. Please join me as, ‘we gather and engage our community to teach, support, and celebrate our student-athletes in their quest for excellence”.

Respectfully yours,
Mark Hollis
Director of Intercollegiate Athletics
