News and Notes from Around the NFL

Brian Hoyer could be in for a big payday next year.  This is the last year of his deal.  The Patriots would like to resign him.  There is going to be a lot of interest in the young man and with the respect he has from Belichick, a lot of teams would love to add him.  I can’t wait to see how it plays out, but no matter where he lands, my buddy and one of the all time good guys is going to get a big payday.

Jack Del Rio could be the first coach to be fired in 2011.  He is on the hot seat and something has to give.  He is a great example of a guy who will be a better coach the second time than the first.  I would hire him in a minute.

Another coach getting a lot of talk around the league is former Broncos coach Josh McDaniels.  He did a great job at first, but tried desperately to be Belichick and alienated a lot of people, just like Belichick did in Cleveland.  There is a lot you can take from the great Belichick, but McDaniels has to stay true to being himself also.  I would hire him in a heartbeat and a close friend of his told me, “I felt bad for Josh that it didn’t work out in Denver, but he learned and he will follow Belichick’s lead and be a much better second time around coach.”  I totally agree.

Jim Tressel will serve a six-week suspension by the NFL.  My daughter and I saw him recently and I can tell you he looks ready to go and I for one can’t wait to see him back in football. He may miss out on 2011 and 2012, but by 2013 at the latest I expect to see him back on the sidelines somewhere in football as a head coach.

Could the Patriots bring back Randy Moss?  Yes.  Prior to the season?  No.  Veterans have guaranteed deals if they are on the roster to start the year.  He is too much of a head case when he can’t be cut without big money being at stake. I am not saying it will happen, but I wouldn’t be shocked and neither would folks around the league if he comes back with the Patriots.  I still say they are my pick for the AFC Super Bowl team.  Next week I will tell you whom I think for the NFC and my rookie of the year.

Lions’ fans finally have something to be excited about.  Excited being the word.  I say 8-8 in 2011 and no playoffs.  That will be next year.

I told you months ago that with all the Tampa for Tiki talk it wouldn’t happen. I also told you that IF he were back in 2011, then it would be after the first week for the same reasons as Randy Moss above.  Let every young player learn from this.  Cancers in the locker room don’t go over well.

Tommie Harries got cut from the Colts this week.  There is still a place for that young man in this league.  He got sidetracked and it hurt him.  He is a gentleman and a great guy.  If he can dig down and find true north in his life, I believe he can return to a pro bowl type level.  Is he done?  He is if he wants to be, but I for one want to see him make it.

Hey Redskins fan.  Here is some good news. In 2012 your new coach should be Jon Gruden.  The bad news is that you have to wait a year.
