We are quickly approaching championship week!  The boys are moving into the regional finals round and will be headed to the Breslin Center next…if they can pass the test this week.  I will admit that I was surprised by a few games this week, but anything can happen when it gets to this stage.  Teams had better come out ready to run and gun or they will be running and hitting (track and baseball).  Let’s move swiftly into the action from this past week.

High Score of the Week

Baraga 95 Ewen-Trout Creek 75 (170 points)

It’s not often that two Yooper teams top the high score of the week.  This time, it was by far the highest score.  Brent VanAlstine was the high scorer with 31 points.  Alden Conner scored 19 and Justin Hartzog scored 16 in the win.  For Ewen-Trout Creek, Jordan LaPlatt scored 19 and Dillion Gordon chipped in 16, of which 12 came from three point shots.

Low Score of the Week

Manchester 29 Napoleon 26 (55 points)

In what was a bit of a shocker, Manchester beat Napoleon for their first district championship since 2004, despite coming into the tournament with a 6-14 record.  Napoleon made just 10 field goals and connected on three of 21 shots from three point land.  Manchester senior Josh Blades was able to get fouled and make his free throws to go ahead with only 28 ticks left.  After a missed three pointer by Napoleon, Blade sank another two free throws to go up 29-26.  Keith Wood missed a shot at the buzzer that would have tied the game.  Blades scored 15 points, tossed two assists, and pulled down nine rebounds in the winning effort.  Heath Sullivan was the leading scorer for Napoleon with six points and eight rebounds.

Coach Cottrell’s BLOWOUT of the Week

Pellston 73 Alanson 24 (49 points)

Christopher Hass scored 22 in the win and teammate Andy Hamlin scored 14.  Thomas Williams scored 13 in the losing effort.

Matt Costello – Bay City Western High School (2012)

In what was considered a HUGE upset, Bay City Western, led by 2012 recruit Matt Costello, knocked off Saginaw High to move into the regional finals.  It was the first win over Saginaw High since 1994.  Costello scored the 13 of the team’s 17 points in the first quarter.  He finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds.  Next up is Clarkston in the regional final Wednesday night.
