MHSAA

Well, it’s finally here!  We have finally moved past the regular season into the playoffs.  The action is heating up in gyms across the state.  Some teams have already played and fallen victim to the “one and done” monster that can eat dreams of high school ballers.  With that said, we will delve into this past week in high school hoops.

High Score of the Week

Warren Michigan Collegiate 98 Hamtramck 77 (175 points)

It was before district action began, but it doesn’t make it any less exciting.  Trevaughn Craighead scored 25 points and tossed 10 assists in the win.  Tommy Bush scored 16 points and pulled down 15 rebounds.  Hamtramck’s Anthony Nicecaj scored 23 in the loss.  Interestingly enough, Hamtramck shot 40 three pointers but were not able to win the game.  Maybe they should have pushed it to the post.

Low Score of the Week

Macomb L’anse Creuse North 30 Frasier 29 (59 points)

It all came down to the wire; LCN saw it’s eight point second half lead evaporate and was up just one point with 10 seconds left on the clock.  Frasier scored, but left time on the clock.  Craig Smelley shot it for LCN and Tyler Conklin chipped it in as time expired.  Conklin was the leading scorer with 10 points.  Deanta Williams scored nine in the losing effort.

Coach Cottrell’s BLOWOUT o the Week Part 1

Detroit Country Day 77 Madison Heights Lamphere 13 (64 points)

Ouch…not a pretty ending for Lamphere.  The loss ended their season with a Lion-esque record of 0-21.  Austin Price scored 16 for Country Day.  Mory Diane scored 10.

Coach Cottrell’s BLOWOUT of the Week Part 2

Melvindale Academy of Business and Technology 92 Taylor Trillium 28 (64 points)

It was another nasty blowout by Melvindale ABT.  Steven Williams scored 23 points.  Geffrey Gaddy scored 21 and pulled down 11 rebounds for 22-0 ABT.  In the losing effort, Jordan Hill scored 11.

Century Club Part 3

Flint Powers Catholic 103 Goodrich 63

It was the first time Flint Powers has ever scored 100 points or more in the post season.  Also, it was the fourth straight time Powers has knocked Goodrich out of the playoffs.  Vince Adams led all scorers with 27 points.  Patrick Lucas-Perry scored 20 as did Javontae Hawkins.  In the losing effort, both Nathan Landsgaard and Trevor Lucus scored 18.

Century Club Part 4

Detroit Pershing 102 Hamtramck 45

Not much to say about this game other than it was a blowout.  Interestingly enough, it is the second time Hamtramck appeared in the column this week.

Taiwan Jones – New Baltimore Anchor Bay

Jones had a pretty good game yesterday against Macomb L’Anse Creuse North.  He scored 20 points and pulled down 15 rebounds in their 59-43 victory.  Unfortunately, his ride ended with a loss to St. Clair.  Ok, get Jones to Coach Mannie ASAP!
