MHSAA

Well, the regular season is coming to an end.  Teams are gearing up for their run toward that Michigan shaped trophy.  Many teams have locked up conference titles and are ready to make magic happen on the court.  Other squads are nearing the end of the season and have already started looking at those baseball bats and track spikes.  District action begins this upcoming week!  Our march toward the Breslin Center is full steam ahead!  Let’s take a look at some interesting games from this past week.

Low Score of the Week

Flint Michigan School for the Deaf 34 Flint Valley School 18 (52 points)

School for the Deaf was almost on the losing end of my low score of the week.  Then, I found this game.  Everyone knows I like writing about FMSftD because they deserve just as much recognition as anyone else.  Unfortunately, there wasn’t a recap of this game.  These two schools have graced this column plenty of times this season, and that’s not always a good thing.

High Score of the Week

Freeland 95 Chesaning 93 (OT) (188 points)

This sounds like an exciting battle in the Tri Valley Conference Central Division.  Chesaning sophomore Josh Kunik tied a school record with 41 points, but ended up on the losing side.  Free throws kept them in this game, with the Indians making 32 of 38 free throws.  In the winning effort, Mason Schriber scored 35 points and stole the inbounds pass with only two seconds left to preserve the win.  Luke Schmidt helped Freeland by scoring 18 points, blocking four shots, and pulling down 13 rebounds.

Coach Cottrell’s BLOWOUT of the Week

Richland Gull Lake 78 Comstock 19 (59 points)

After mainly close games last week, Gull Lake, one of the top teams in Class B, blew out Comstock.  At the end of the first quarter, Gull Lake led 25-2 after one and held a 38-9 halftime advantage, then cruised to an easy victory to stay perfect on the season.  Reserve player Dean Kolstad came off the bench to lead the scoring attack with 14 points.  Adrian Zuidweg scored 13 and 12 players total scored for the Blue Devils.  In the losing effort, Shaquan Jones and Deron Taylor were the high scorers for Comstock with four points each.
