Optimism is everywhere as the Lions open rookie mini-camp today

I am down here in Allen Park today for the Lions 2007 rookie mini camp and the word of the day is optimism.  From the Lions front office to the coaching staff the players there is excitement.

The Lions selected eight players in last weekends NFL draft and I think that as many as seven will make the team and the eighth will get a fighting chance.  That in and of itself along with a bunch of undrafted rookies and guys looking for a break will make this weekend a great camp.

If last year was any indication of how the Lions will do this weekend, then the Lions can really make some improvement.  At last years rookie mini-camp it was amazing to see the passion and the intensity of the Lions staff.  Sarge told me then “these men are out here doing their best to fulfill their dreams and to earn a living, at the very least my staff and I have to give them NFL level coaching so that they know that they got our best and we know we gave our best.”

That attitude of course will help the drafted rookie crop but it will also give a whole other group of guys a chance to live the dream.  It will be very interesting to see Drew Stanton and Calvin Johnson as they get there first taste of the Mike Martz offense and coaching and that should be fun to see.
